Great North Run - Newcastle - 5th October
James Askew had the best run of his life in last weekend's Great North Run, not only was James 1st under 18 but he was also 1st under 20 to finish in an excellent time of 1hr 20ins 31sec. James's dad Kevin coaches his son and keeps him in check.
Ross Newton Finished well despite a foot injury in a time of 1.33.41, next John Burnside who has completed every G.N.R. and loves mass events finished in a very good 1hr 36 min. then long distance specialist Ray Halton ran well to finish in 1hr 55 min. Francine Vollans finished in 2hrs 2min. Georgette Reid ran well after spending summer in the USA, her time was 2hrs 6mins. Just 15secs behind new member Penny Johnson ran her 1st race for the club coming home in again 2hrs 6min. Catherine Lowden came home in 2hrs 19min. Paul Musgrave ran round in 2hrs 35min. Finally Julie Stoddart ran round in 2hrs 36min. Ian Wade and Caroline Holmes also ran but times are not known.
NYSD X/C - Croft - 12th October
In this season's first N.Y.S.D. cross country held at Croft Autodrome on a sunny day, Aycliffe runners expected a flat course but instead had to contend with 5 short hills on each lap.
William Crossen ran well in the U/15s race to finish in 12th place and 17.26, Daniel Inglis also ran well in the U/17s race to finish in 13th place and 27min.
The ladies 4 mile race had 6 women from the club running. 1st back in 20th place and 1st over 45 Susan Milburn led in the team strongly to finish in 30.32 next and close behind was Denise Hall who is preparing for the Dublin Marathon in 24th and a good time of 31.11, then new member Penny Johnson ran very well for her 1st cross country to finish in 39th place, time 36.28. Lynn Gibson ran strongly to finish in 43rd place, time 38.19, next Jane Shepherd dug in to finish in 50th spot, time 45.26, finally Sylvia Black made a determined effort to finish the race in 52nd place, time 55.33. The team finished in 7th place.
The Mens 8.5km race had 12 Aycliffe runners taking part, 1st to finish was the club's No 1 runner James Askew in 21st place and 7th U/20 in 32.13 despite feeling tired. Next Peter Milburn in 43rd place, time 35.29, then rare racer Shaun Bell who does not train at all still managed to finish well in 48th place, time 35.44. His uncle George Reid ran very well to finish in 50th place and 2nd over 50, time 35.49, Richard Campbell also ran well to finish in 52nd place, time 35.52, then Martin Turnbull finished in 67th place, time 37.34. John Burnside stormed home in 78th place, time 38.36, Kevin Greenall is on the comeback trail after an injury plagued year, he finished strongly in 83rd place, time 39.27, next Colin Gibson who adapts well to hilly courses finished in 89th place, time 40.31, then Trevor Needham finished in 91st place,time 41.15, Rob Nicholson finished in 102nd place, time 48.00, finally Dave Thompson in 105th place, time 48.15.
Hellhole Woods 10k - Stanley - 19th October
Aycliffe ladies won the team race at the Hellhole woods multi terrain 10k
race held on the 19th, The race was held on the old railway lines between Stanley and Beamish which included the gruelling Hellhole woods.
First to lead the team was Janet Raper who made light work of difficult conditions under foot to finish in 47.21 and also 1st over 45/lady, just behind came Susan Milburn in 47.43 and 2nd 0/45 lady, finally Janet McRae made up the team to finish in 51.08. Other results - Peter Milburn returned in 41.04 and 19th place, then George Reid in 43.18 and 25th place, Chris Forster in 52.41.
Richmond Castle 10K - Richmond - 19th October
On the same day 8 Aycliffe runners made the short trip to North Yorkshire for the Richmond Castle 10k, The hilly course suited Martin Randall finishing in 41.05 and 30th place, then Julia Atkinson-Tait ran well to finish in 43.11 and 1st over 40 lady. John Edmondson returned in 47.31, next Caroline Holmes finished in 48.59, then Dave Mackenzie in 51.51, finally Heighington duo Linda Connelly in 57.19 and Gail Vernon in 62.43.
Cumbrian Half-Marathon - Carlisle - 19th October
Meanwhile Trish Kay took part in the Cumbrian Half Marathon held on hilly roads round Carlisle and finished in 1.47.43
NYSD X/C - Summerhill - 26th October
The 2nd Cross Country in the NYSD series took place at the gruelling Summerhill course in Hartlepool.
Promising Daniel Inglis ran well to finish in 11th place in the under 17s race , his time was 26.07.
Next in the Ladies Race Susan Milburn finished in 20.43 and 2nd O/45, next new member Penny Johnson ran a good race to finish in 24.22 and 38th place, finally Lynn Gibson made up the depleted team to finish in very good 25.06 and 42nd place.
The Aycliffe men's team faired better to finish in 6th place and 1st South Durham club. First to finish for the team was James Askew in 22nd place, time 36.11. James who is coached by his dad Kevin will now up his training to be ready for the North Eastern cross country champs. in December. Peter Milburn ground it out to finish in 33rd place and 37.52, next and not far behind Martin Turnbull had a very good run to finish in 38.04 and 35th place, then his uncle George Reid sailed round the course to finish in 39.38 despite taking several tumbles. Richard Campbell finished in 39.57 and 51st place, next Kevin Greenall back in 42.59 and 70th position, finally Colin Gibson finished in 43.32, and 73rd place.
Dublin Marathon - Dublin - 27th October
Denise Hall took part in the Dublin Marathon and finished in a very good 4.01.07
