Old Monks Race - Hartlepool - Jan. 4th
In what must be one of the best multi-terrain races in the northeast, 14 hardy Club members braved the cold to run this six-mile race. The race was the first of the club's new championship events and was won by lightning James Askew who at the age of 17 beat many more seasoned runners to finish seventh in the overall race with a time of 33' 32". He was followed by Peter Milburn (35' 50"), Martin Randall (37'00"), Richard Campbell (37' 01") and George Reid (37'26"). The next group included John Edmondson (42' 42"), Janet Raper (43' 06"), Susan Milburn (43' 15"), Stewart Vernon (44' 19") and Janet McRae (44' 33"). John Young (45' 47") finished just in front of Kevin Greenall (46' 05") who managed to shrug off a persistent wheeze. Chris Forster (47' 45") and Penny Johnson (50' 18") completed the club's worthy performance.
Sedgefield Harriers Handicap - Fishburn - Jan. 11th
Eleven members of Newton Aycliffe Athletics Club braved a very windy start to the Sedgefield Handicap race. Janet McRae was the first team member to finish, the handicap system putting her just in front of Martin Randall, who, with Richard Campbell, was joint 2nd fastest round the course - Peter Milburn clocking the fastest time. Janet Raper was right behind Martin, and within 2 minutes Susan Milburn, George Reid, Julia Atkinson, Steven Dawson, John Young, Chris Forster, Peter Milburn and Richard Campbell all finished.
Brass Monkey Half-marathon - York - Jan. 18th
Caroline Holmes (102:37), David MacKenzie (109:34) and David McDonald (128:51) completed the Brass Monkey half marathon from York racecourse in fine weather with only a little wind.
NYSD X/C League - Whitby - Jan.18th
Meanwhile Colin Gibson and Rob Nicholson were the only Club representatives at Whitby and finished 76th and 88th respectively in 45:15 and 52:46.
Northern Athletics X/C Championships - St. Helens - Jan. 24th
James Askew ran in the Northern Athletics Cross Country Championships on January 24th at St Helens and came 48th out of 83 the 8km race with a time of 28mins.
DFR Black Hill and Beck race - Hamsterley - Jan. 25th
Peter Milburn was the only runner from the club in this race. 50 or more runners took part in the snow covered course which got deeper as they ascended towards Black Hill. Peter finished up 12th, time 56.59.
Lakeside Canal Run - Frimley Green - Jan. 25th
John Edmondson threw a double by combining a visit in the south of the country with the Lakeside Canal Run at Frimley Green, home of the world darts championships. Half the 7.5 mile race went on the scenic but slippery towpath of the Basingstoke Canal. John finished in a respectable position of 101st out of over 400 runners.
