News of our Junior Athletes
Newton Aycliffe Cheer on the Juniors at the Cross Country Championships
On December 12th at Branksome School, junior members of Newton Aycliffe Athletics Club, proved their training had gained many of them a place in the top 10 for the North East.
The North East Cross Country Championship event draws talented runners from far and wide, and the day did not disappoint. The field was strong and the course was muddy, but Henry Johnson made his debut in the U13 event a moment to be proud of. Only 11 years old, he was running against athletes who were more experienced and older. However, sticking with the lead pack meant that he completed the 3k course only 1 minute behind the winner, and in 8th place with 12.58.
The U15 4k race gave strong competition for the more experienced runners, William Crossen and Ryan Walton. They ran extremely well, despite the tough conditions. Ryan was close on the heals of older boy William, and they both finished with very little breath left! A tremendous sprint finish for Ryan gave him 13th position with 15.01, but just in the lead was William with 9th place in 14.54.
U20 was a longer course of 8.3k, and James Askew took the distance in his stride. He seemed to slice through the mud with ease to bring himself home in 11 th place with 30.50. All the boys feel confident to tackle to next big calendar event which will be the Northern Championships in the beginning of January. Thanks go to their coaches and families who give up time to help the boys with their training.
The Jolly Holly Jog at Ripon on Monday 28th Dec. had 441 Finishers returning on the treacherous and snowbound course, Martin Randall made light work on the black ice and skating rink like conditions running very well to finish in 15th spot, time 43.16, next just managing to stay on his feet Peter Milburn in 20th, time 44.05,(2nd O/50 vet.)
Susan Milburn made a return to her 1st race for 2 months finishing in 54.29
(132nd and 1st O/50 vet.) Brave Janet Raper crossed the line with Susan
after taking a tumble on the ice finishing in the same time (133rd) next Toft hills keen racer John Young returned in one piece to finish in 55.35 (150th) next Chris Forster slipped and skidded round in 58.52 (191st) finally Janet McRae threw caution to the wind and made it round in 61.51

The hardy ones aren't deterred by a bit of snow! (Complex training).
